CHOICE Review

Based in part on a comprehensive survey of 150 Forbes 500 companies, Kravetz discusses how progressive organizational human-resource policies can enhance morale, reduce turnover, and promote productivity, thereby improving the organization's financial success. The author, a human resources consultant, has published a number of articles on personnel topics and has twice received a national award from the American Society of Personnel Administration for his creative human resource applications. His book is easy to read and replete with a variety of suggestions concerning how organizations can strengthen their human assets. Of particular interest to readers are likely to be the case studies in which the author discusses specific human resource practices and strategies from various top-ranked companies, including IBM, Hewlett-Packard, American Express, and Aetna. Line managers and human resource professionals alike will find this volume helpful as it illustrates how innovations in job design, participative management, flexible work periods, and employee career planning can translate into growth in corporate sales, profits, dividends, and earnings per share. Kravetz also considers specific changes in management style, compensation systems, employee benefits, and organization structure, which managers are likely to find beneficial. All in all, a significant contribution to the growing literature on the relationship between human resource productivity and organizational success. University and corporate collections. -T. Gutteridge, Southern Illinois University--Carbondale
