CHOICE Review

This unique work organizes research and application as to why educators and laypersons should be concerned with the importance of play as a developmental activity. Chapters in Part 1 on historical, anthropological, and sociological perspectives establish a framework for examining the importance of play activity in schools. Part 2 deals with educational perspectives of play at preschool, elementary, junior high school, and high school levels, and in special education settings. However, two of these chapters use schooling rather than developmental needs of youth as the prime focus for examining play needs. The chapter on junior high adolescent play deals more with ``junior'' high school perspectives than with the current emphasis that middle grades schooling should respond better to pubescent developmental needs. The next chapter focuses more on high school organized sport concerns within the high school than on adolescent developmental issues. The reviews and commentaries in Part 3 conclude what stands as an excellent and informative work about the importance of play in the development and education of youth. A good library acquisition for use at graduate and undergraduate levels.-C.F. Toepfer Jr., SUNY at Buffalo
