Thinking about church architecture has come to an impasse. Reformers and traditionalists are talking past each other. In Theology in Stone , Richard Kieckhefer seeks to help both sides move beyond the standoff toward a fruitful conversation about houses of worship. Drawing on a wide range of historical examples with an eye to their contemporary relevance, he offers refreshing new ideas about the meanings and uses of church architecture.

CHOICE Review

Kieckhefer (religion and history, Northwestern Univ.) introduces current debates on theology and church architecture in an informed and well-written volume that stands above most other current work in the field. Although a scholar of religion, Kieckhefer's method is not to privilege theological traditions and explore the buildings they produced, but to begin with architecture and examine patterns of spatial dynamics, centering focus, aesthetic impact, and symbolic resonance in church building for their broad theological implications. After chapters dedicated to each of the above, he offers three case studies: late medieval Beverly, late 19th- and early 20th-century churches of Chicago, and the 20th-century German churches of Rudolph Schwarz, to explore the intermixing of these themes in both traditional and modern contexts. The final chapter is an excellent synthesis of the current debates on church architecture that are taking place largely but not exclusively among Roman Catholics. Some scholars will be frustrated by his unwillingness to explore specific theological distinctions and others by the paucity of illustrative material, but none working near the intersection of religion and architecture can bypass this important work. ^BSumming Up: Essential.
