CHOICE Review

"Kahn's legacy of structural innovation and design collaboration was made complete by his passionate immersion in life." With that theme in Engineering Architecture, the author--Kahn's daughter, an architect herself--effectively describes her father's impact on late 20th-century construction while weaving a biography (focused more on his professional life) around it. Kahn was clearly a pioneer in engineering: he introduced framed and trussed tube construction and their variations into architecture, thus allowing for taller structures while keeping construction costs low. In three parts, Kahn covers in depth and in technical detail her father's early professional years and the state of construction in the 1960s, prior to the development of tube construction. Part 2 discusses innovative variations on the tubular theme, such as tube-in-tube and bundled tubes. Part 3 closes with Kahn's expansion into the Middle East and his contribution to advances in fabric tensile structure technology. The text is well written and illustrated with black-and-white photographs of architecture, construction drawings, and details, as well as with personal photos to remind the reader the book is also a biography. It is an excellent companion to Sara E. Wermiel's Fireproof Building (CH, Dec'00, 38-2181) on 19th-century construction. There are footnotes, a bibliography, and an index. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. General readers; upper-division undergraduates through professionals; two-year technical program students. L. B.
