Resumen: "Richly illustrated and packed with numerous examples, this unique global perspective introduces wetland ecology from basic principles to advanced applications. Thoroughly revised and reorganised, this new edition of this prize-winning textbook begins with underlying causal factors, before moving on to more advanced concepts that add depth and context. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the basic principles covered, illustrated with clear examples. More difficult concepts and exceptions are introduced only once the general principle is well-established. Key principles are now discussed at the beginning of the book, and in order of relative importance, enabling students to understand the most important material without wading through complex theory. New chapters on wetland restoration and wetland services draw upon practical examples from around the world, providing a global context, and a new chapter on research will be particularly relevant to the advanced student planning their own studies"-- Provided by publisher.

CHOICE Review

To some, wetlands are a waste of good land and need to be reclaimed for buildings and roads, not squandered on grasses and trees nor birds and turtles. Ecologist Keddy (Southeastern Louisiana Univ.) knows better and presents a rich and picturesque view of the topic in this new edition of Wetland Ecology (1st ed., CH, May'01, 38-5019). The book is composed of three units. The bulk examines ecosystem function (chapters 1-10); chapter 11 wraps that up by exploring ecosystem services. A single chapter (12) considers research in general and wetland studies in particular. The last section is practical, covering wetland restoration (chapter 13) and ending with "Conservation and Management" (chapter 14). The book is well illustrated with tables, figures, line drawings, and black-and-white photographs, including many of historic interest. Indeed, there is hardly a page without such support. Unfortunately, some line art is fuzzy, no doubt due to scanning. Placement of the color photographs in a center section, a practice designed to reduce production costs, is a bit annoying. This course resource is well written, easily accessible, and a must read for ecologists, managers, and conservationists, as well as those working for regulatory agencies or rendering legal decisions. Summing Up; Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. R. L. Wallace Ripon College
