Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This important work fills a major lacuna in the literature by bringing together, for the first time, all the texts relating to architecture by the multi-faceted Xenakis, who worked with Le Corbusier for 12 years. Sharon Kanach assisted the composer in gathering the texts for this, his last ambitious project. Her commentary throughout the book seeks to bridge the reciprocal influences between music and architecture in the Xenakis oeuvre.

CHOICE Review

The intent of the "The Iannis Xenakis Series" is to memorialize Xenakis (1922-2001) as an engineer, architect, and composer by publishing his complete writings, sketches, drawings, and other archival materials (two of Xenakis's earlier publications, Arts-Sciences, Alloys, 1985, and Formalized Music, rev. ed., 1992, will be incorporated in the series). Kanach divides this first volume in the series into four main sections, bracketed by introductory matter and four appendixes. Section 1, the longest, traverses Xenakis's long association with architect Le Corbusier, a 12-year period during which Xenakis rose from engineer to indispensable collaborator largely responsible for some of Le Corbusier's most famous constructions. The remaining three sections detail Xenakis's writings on architecture; his independent architectural projects; and his "polytopes," i.e., creations combining spatial, acoustical, coloristic, and musical elements in a synthesized totality. Throughout the relationships between mathematics, philosophy, abstract principle, and musical composition remain central. Xenakis's dream of a music that could transcend music was at the heart of his life's work. Though it grew out of his experience as engineer and architect, music was Xenakis's first and ultimate love. This book proves that. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. F. Goossen emeritus, University of Alabama
