CHOICE Review

The focus of this collection is directed toward an assessment of various family-oriented programs and their effectiveness. The volume is helpful for policymakers and evaluators because it offers material that suggests new directions, complete with tools and strategies for improving the effectiveness of these programs. The collection includes case studies that describe innovations in areas such as teen parent programs, early childhood programs for poor children, prenatal and infant health and development programs, and parent education programs. The contributors also deal with evaluation of program effectiveness at several levels: the child, parent-child interaction, the parent, the family system, family stress and coping, and extrafamilial social support. Thorough references at the conclusion of each chapter, two useful appendixes (including a compendium of relevant research instruments and their sources), and a glossary of terms pertinent to research and program evaluation. An excellent companion to America's Family Support Programs, ed. by Sharon L. Kagan et al. (CH, May '88). Most useful for graduate students, policymakers, program evaluators, and agency administrators. R. T. Crow University of Alabama
