CHOICE Review

A thorough orientation to an area of growing concern and complexity, written by a recognized authority in the field of gerontology. Within a single volume, Huttman provides a substantial amount of information and gives practical suggestions on how to obtain access to various programs that offer services for the elderly population. Huttman offers a comprehensive overview of Old Age Assistance, Medicare, and Social Security and emphasizes specifically how national policies and budgeting affect older citizens. Huttman discusses senior centers, counseling, in-home services, adult day care programs, transportation services, meal programs, housing programs, and nursing homes; additional attention is given to sources of financial aid, protection and elderly abuse programs, and information and referral services. A chapter on informal support systems focuses on the role of family/relatives and the community in providing assistance for the elderly. An important feature is Huttman's description of how professionals can use existing resources to benefit elderly clients. A very current and scholarly addition to the literature. Extensive bibliography and subject index. Public and academic libraries serving upper-division undergraduates and above.-R.T. Crow, University of Alabama
