CHOICE Review

Walker and Hunt survey the major types of scientific literature from a communications perspective. Thus, their volume is not a guide to reference sources or the primary literature which might be used to evaluate or develop a library collection. The authors have chosen instead to emphasize the roles of each important form of written communication in science; journals, conference proceedings, technical reports, patents, and maps are each described in a separate chapter. The historical development of each form of communication is outlined and examples and illustrations of early works add interest to the discussion. The significance of each form, both present and potential, and its strengths and limitations are offered in support of a better understanding of the scientific literature and its producers and users. The last two chapters summarize the functions of secondary literature, including abstracting and indexing services, online services, and review literature, and discuss issues related to bibliographic control. The authors draw on a large body of research by scholars of the sociology and history of science and cite in their references many of the classics that have shaped our view of scientific communication. This book does not report new research but is valuable for the very readable overview that it provides to anyone who works as a science information specialist. Recommended for research collections with strength in history and sociology of science. -J. M. Hurd, University of Illinois at Chicago
