School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up-- This brief introduction to teen pregnancy has its pluses and minuses. The reading level is low (an average fifth grader could handle it); the imporant parts are repeated; and the large type and short paragraphs will appeal to poor readers. The presentation is scrupulously unbiased. The girl's options--keeping the baby (whether or not she gets married), abortion, and adoption--are covered in the same nonjudgmental tone. The factual, unemotional approach and some included statistics make this a possible source for reports. All of the major areas are covered--how pregnancy occurs, what pregnancy is like, options, who to talk to, concluding with birth-control information. One major drawback is the lack of depth in any of the areas; for example, preparing for the baby's needs is covered in one short paragraph. The quality of the photographs ranges from murky to adequate. The letters from teenagers, sprinkled throughout the text, sound contrived, and the writing style is dull. Although not as informative or as readable as Witt's Mom--I'm Pregnant (Stein and Day, 1982; o.p.), it does have one big advantage: teens with poor reading skills will be able to read it. --Karen K.
