The Principles of Knitting has been totally rewritten--new instructions, new illustrations, and new information. While the basics of knitting have not changed much, June's understanding of the material has deepened over the last twenty-five years, and she's eager to share what she has learned with the knitting world. In addition, the book has been reorganized to make it easier to use and has a gorgeous new design.

Library Journal Review

Out of print since the mid-1990s, Hiatt's classic guide to all things knitting has been fully revised and expanded. If it's knitting-related and you need to know about it, it's probably in this book. Hiatt goes well beyond the basic how-to approach, choosing instead to provide context and explain the whys behind the techniques. Knitters of all skill levels- will find a comprehensive guide to the basics and beyond, including information about lace, cables, color work, beaded knitting, and finishing techniques. One drawback: at 700-plus pages, it's more of an at-home reference than a portable book for the knitting bag. VERDICT This new edition of one of the great knitting references will bring Hiatt's clear explanations and comprehensive information to a new generation of knitters. (c) Copyright 2012. Booklist Review

This volume will be a great boon for knitters. Exhaustive in scope and organized in an orderly fashion, it not only covers virtually every aspect of knitting, but it also gives alternative methods for most of them. After explaining the basics--casting on and off, increasing and decreasing, working with color and speciality stitches--Hiatt describes how to read and design a pattern and how to finish a project. Despite his claim that the book is for beginners as well as the more advanced, it will be of most interest to experienced knitters, who will more easily grasp the terminology and the instructional drawings (there are more than 600 of them, as well as numerous black-and-white photographs). While this encyclopedic tome should prove a popular circulating item, many libraries will want one for reference as well. Glossary and index. --Ilene Cooper
