CHOICE Review

Hearnshaw (emeritus, Liverpool University) offers a truly intellectual history of psychology: an intricate account of how (primarily academic) psychology has evolved from antiquity to the late 20th century. His history is told with ample analyses of the fine points of theory and with excellent bibliographic references. The Shaping of Modern Psychology goes much further than most accounts (e.g., Duane P. Schultz and S.E. Schultz's A History of Modern Psychology, 4th ed., 1987, or Michael Wertheimer's A Brief History of Psychology, 3rd ed., 1987) of the intellectual heritage of psychology in placing that problematic science within the broader landscape of human knowledge. Although the text lacks full consideration of the social, political, and economic dimensions of modern psychology, it does provide readers with an excellent starting point from which to begin these considerations. Like Thomas Hardy Leahey's A History of Psychology (2nd ed., 1987) the book contains more material on the recent developments in cognitive psychology than is found in the typical history of psychology. The text would function well as a graduate or upper-level undergraduate textbook and would be a solid addition to libraries serving psychology students.-J.G. Morawski, Wesleyan University
