CHOICE Review

This book offers theoretical and practical information on how the environment affects cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, muscular, and neural systems, including answers to performance problems in various adverse environments. Haymes and Wells discuss thermal regulation in the human, specifically the physiological mechanisms involved. They explain specific adaptations, exercise responses, and thermoregulation of individuals exposed to a cold environment. The authors also discuss the acclimatization process and mountain sickness as well as the physiological aspects of chronic exposure to hypoxia. The authors further describe the impact of various air pollutants on performance. An interesting chapter covers the problems athletes encounter when they travel, including traveling from sea level to high altitude, adapting to cold and hot environments, preparing for performance in air pollution, and the effects of jet lag and traveling across time zones. Each chapter contains an introduction, questions the chapter addresses, and a summary. The work contains various tables and guidelines on environment and human performance. Extensive references will lead interested readers to supplemental information. The authors have written for a diverse readership-physical educators, athletes, fitness professionals, athletic trainers, physicians, exercise physiologists, health educators, and others interested in human performance. An excellent resource for academic and public library collections.-J.M. Manning, William Paterson College of New Jersey
