CHOICE Review
An athletic trainer for the Cincinnati Ballet and a specialist in dance medicine, Haas here addresses ballet and modern dancers who wish to learn the fundamentals of anatomical structure and principles of kinesiology in order to improve their dance technique and avoid injuries. Although other works provide a more thorough, inclusive discussion of dance anatomy and kinesiology (Sally Fitt's Dance Kinesiology, 2nd ed., CH, May'97, 34-5004, comes to mind), this accessible book serves as practical reference on joint, skeletal, and movement planes; strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardio-respiration exercises and conditioning principles. It can guide the physical development of all dancers, be they practicing professionals or student dancers. Teachers of all genres and styles of dance will appreciate the practical movement sequences, which will help their students develop specific muscles and correct technical weaknesses and skeletal misalignments. Haas devotes more than half the book to exercises that target specific muscles, making this source excellent for blending anatomical knowledge and specific dance techniques; understanding the relationships between joints, muscles, and bones in dance; and assuring that a dancer's technique is anatomically as well as aesthetically correct. Many of the exercises include illustrations that reveal static and dynamic alignment necessary to prevent injuries. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals. C. T. Bond Goucher CollegeNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
