CHOICE Review

The explicit purpose of this work is to develop a basis for a more holistic study of population health, specifically that of population groups. The work is dominated by biological data, primarily regarding causes of, risk factors in, and therapy for specific diseases. Emphasis is placed on the need for research of the sociological and psychological health of populations. The author encourages the reader to verify all health data with original sources; this precludes the use of this text as a reference in research. The work has an ambiguous format; most terminology is defined but is used inconsistently. Pathophysiology is detailed in several areas. Culture, race, and ethnicity are equated loosely. Although the work is highly referenced, classic, relevant works of T. Parsons, R. Fox, A. Strauss, D. Mechanic, and E. Goffman are not acknowledged. Clarity is lacking in some tables and fixtures; ``significance'' is attributed to various data without reporting appropriate statistical analysis. The table of contents and index are useful after the book has been studied thoroughly. For upper-division students of health and population courses.-V.L. Norman, University of North Dakota
