Publishers Weekly Review

Gr 2-6. This title combines essays, games, crafts, and music aimed at developing an appreciation for Islamic culture among elementary school children. It's divided into eight sections that cover such topics as the mosque, palace life, the desert, and the bazaar. An index and addresses for Islamic agencies in Spain, South and Central America, and the Caribbean are included. Section introductions are informative, and the author takes pains to draw positive comparisons between Middle Eastern and European life. These sections provide the real "meat" of the book and are more appropriate for parents and teachers. Following these introductions are a variety of games, many of which only tenuously relate to the subject. Musical activities include several bars of traditional music accompanied by words. The craft projects are engaging, and kids will have a ball making turbans, dance costumes, and mosaics. Instructions are brief, thereby requiring adult participation, and some call for unusual materials not commonly found in classrooms or at home. There is a real need for materials for children that will help them develop appreciation for different cultures and beliefs. Currently there is little available on this topic, and even less in Spanish. Because of the weaknesses already described, this book is recommended for purchase by large public libraries or school libraries supporting a specific curriculum. The best possible use might be for scouts or other groups that may have more access to supervising adults and larger budgets. -- Cheryl Scheer, Denver P.L., CO (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
