Booklist Review

Goodman is a communications theorist and professor of psychology at UCLA. Like most other writers in the communications field, he microscopically analyzes an ordinary process that most people take for granted-- in this case, talk. His aim is to illustrate how improving habits of talk can enrich interpersonal relationships. Talk, say Goodman and coauthor Esterly, has six basic elements: disclosure, reflection, interpretation, advice, silence, and questions. The first half of this volume devotes a chapter to each of these topics. In the second half, the authors put theory into practice through an extensive series of self-help exercises. The general communications principles elucidated here will themselves hold the attention of interested readers, but the book suffers overall from a dry, academic style and labored sentences. Recommended strictly as an informational aid for those involved in the field of communication science. Notes; to be indexed. MB.
