CHOICE Review

Gill (University of North Carolina, Greensboro) is well qualified to write in this area, having been actively teaching and publishing for the past decade. In comparison with most other recent works, which are anthologies, this is a comprehensive approach to the discipline of sport psychology as it has evolved. Relevant research from psychology and other fields is incorporated well and serves as important foundational material for the specific sport psychology research. The material is well organized according to traditional divisions within the field-topics included pertain to individual psychology, social influences on participation, and motivation, in addition to historical information. The organizational structure, along with the comprehensive indexes and references, makes for a work that is amenable to being used by persons interested only in specific topics. The breadth of the field is indicative of the potential breadth of appeal of this book, for which a need has long existed. Although its primary value will be as a textbook, it will be a valuable addition to libraries as a reference source and general information, particularly given the growing interest in this field. It should be useful mainly to upper-division undergraduates.-S. Jennings, University of California, Davis
