Library Journal Review
Not just a handbook, this can be considered the bible on social psychology. The two volumes consist of three parts: "The Science of Social Psychology," "The Social Being," and "The Social World." Fiske (psychology, Princeton Univ.), Daniel T. Gilbert (psychology, Harvard Univ.), and the late Gardner Lindzey (former president, American Psychological Assoc.) include 37 extensive articles written by world-renowned experts on such topics as the history of social psychology, social cognitive neuroscience, motivation, emotion, mind perception, morality, relationships, influence and leadership, and cultural psychology. The value of this set lies in the extensive coverage of each topic, including historical themes and overviews, leading research, practical examples, and a wealth of references. Each chapter is like reading a condensed book on the subject. As an example, the handbook illustrates how the critical contexts of each era, from the 1930s to the 2000s, affect group dynamics, attitudes, and social perception and cognition. There are numerous illustrations and diagrams that illuminate difficult topics. Bottom Line Since its publication in 1935, this has proven to be the foremost reference for academics, researchers, and graduate students in psychology, as it offers the most current, well-researched, and thorough information in social psychology. In addition, the volumes are well written, and the information is accessible and valuable to a wide audience. Highly recommended.-Kathleen A. Welton, Chicago (c) Copyright 2010. The fifth edition of this classic (4th, 1998) provides a massive overview of the discipline for advanced graduate students and scholars. This 1,400-page handbook, completely reorganized in a logical sequence to portray the field, supplements previous editions. The expert contributors, who are mostly American, cover newer thematic emphases in the discipline, e.g., group influences, subjectivism, and "the nonobvious" or "surprisingness," as outlined in the initial chapter. This new opening onto the discipline's history describes historical influences and recent trends in research, notably evolutionary psychology, terror management, positive psychology, and self-regulation. Chapters in part 1 treat the science of social psychology; part 2 is titled "The Social Being"; and part 3 contains 17 chapters under the rubric "Social World," covering topics such as interpersonal and group relations, social conflict, political behavior, and law. Contributors weave important recent research with clear explanation of ideas. Although chapter 20, "Experimental Existential Psychology" (including the concept of terror management) is written by prestigious authors, its subtitle--"Coping with the Facts of Life"--reflects its readability. Whereas A. W. Kruglanski and E. T. Higgins's Social Psychology: Handbook of Basic Principles (2nd ed., CH, Feb'08, 45-3496) could be a manual for the discipline, this newer, longer Handbook could be an entire curriculum. An important source for graduate-level social sciences. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students and faculty/researchers. M. K. Susan T. Current editor of Annual Review of Psychology, (2000-2010). Professor Fiske's research addresses how stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination are encouraged or discouraged by social relationships, such as cooperation, competition, and power.
Daniel T. Gilbert, Ph.D. His popular Stumbling onto Happiness, published by Knopf in May 2006 reflects his research on affective forecasting, which is an attempt to understand how and how well people predict their emotional reactions to future events.
