CHOICE Review

The premise of this rich and practical book is that psychological maltreatment is ``the core issue in child abuse and neglect,'' and that the lasting emotional effects are probably the most important component. It is the outcome of the 1983 International Conference on Psychological Abuse of Children and Youth held at Indianapolis. The contributors-including psychologists, school officials, and attorneys-have prepared 18 chapters. Part 1 discusses varying definitions of maltreatment and sets the background to abuse problems and their literature. Part 2 deals with various areas of abuse (sexual, corporal, substance) and considers the effects of prejudice, inadequate support, and various environmentally threatening situations. Part 3 analyzes the legal, legislative, educational, and theoretical implications. The appendixes list several influential definitions in full, and offer directories to related organizations. Useful author and subject indexes and selected chapter references are included. It will probably become a seminal influence upon research, legislation, and enlightenment regarding a stubborn, complicated social problem. Although the book is directed at persons who are professionally involved with abused youth, it will be useful to advanced undergraduates and graduate students.-F. Laycock, Oberlin College
