CHOICE Review

This book is a labor of love, based on a lifetime of observation, and 12 years in the making. It profiles 40 significant, successful public urban spaces of varying character. Half are in Italy, four in the US, the remainder in other European countries. For each square, retired architect Gatje offers a well-written narrative, an informative series of illustrations, a useful collection of numerical data, and a 1:1,000-scale plan. The narratives contain interesting, reliable historical information, along with highly personal observations and opinions. The illustrations consist primarily of lovely color photographs showing the spaces in their current state, selectively augmented by diagrams and historic images. The numerical data describe the spaces' size and proportions. The plans are digitally drawn and strongly colored, using identical, easily comparable graphic conventions. This book is hard to categorize. It is in part a reference for urban designers, in part a textbook for students of cities, in part a guide for would-be travelers, and in part a coffee-table book for casual observers. Although a more clearly focused book might have been more satisfying to any one group of readers, this unique, beautiful book is a great contribution to the understanding and appreciation of urban space. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. D. Sachs Kansas State University
