Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

In What Does It Mean to Grow Old? essayists come to grips as best they can with the phenomenon of an America that is about to become the Old Country. They have been drawn from every relevant discipline--gerontology, social medicine, politics, health, anthropology, ethics, law--and asked to speak their mind. Most of them write extremely well [and their] sharply individual voices are heard.

Includes index.

Bibliography: p. 247-273.

CHOICE Review

An excellent addition to humanities scholarship in aging. The work is an outgrowth of an effort initiated in the mid-1970s and later funded by the Richardson Foundation in 1983, which commissioned pieces on meaning in old age from thinkers in law, humanities, medicine, and the social sciences. The end product is an interdisciplinary volume of essays that examines the cultural meanings of being old in the US. The book is divided into two sections. Part 1 includes essays on meanings in old age; virtues and vices of the elderly; risks, rights, and responsibilities of the aged; legal reform; and an excellent work by Thomas Cole on bourgeois morality. Part 2 provides a superb examination of reminiscence and life reviews, and also includes other topics, such as health care and old age; neighborhood communality, frailty, and strength in old age. The volume is well integrated, and offers important insights. Careful editing has resulted in a tightly crafted work that avoids the unevenness between chapters that often plagues such collections. One appendix, a bibliographical essay on aging and meaning, a well-organized select bibliography subdivided by disciplines, chapter notes, and an index. Strongly recommended for graduate and undergraduate libraries.-L.A. Baumhover, University of Alabama
