CHOICE Review

Although the primary purpose of this work is to list and evaluate books dealing with disabilities for young people from preschool through high school, much of the value of the work lies in the preliminary chapters. These treat the role of nonfictional literature in helping young people understand various disabilities; attitudes, practices and terminology relating to disability; and printed sources of information on the treatment for disabilities. The section on terminology is particularly helpful. The four main chapters cover works dealing with different types of problems-physical, sensory, cognitive and behavioral, and those resulting from multiple/severe disabilities. For each book, in addition to the bibliographical information, the appropriate grade level and specific disability treated are given. The work is described in two to four paragraphs, followed by a straightforward but brief ``analysis'' which is both evaluative and informative. The annotations contain helpful phrases like ``frankly sentimental but never overdone or unrealistic,'' or ``presents technical information with great clarity and balances personal narrative and exposition effectively.'' The volume is considerably enhanced by the professional bibliography and separate author, title, and subject indexes. It is particularly recommended for those entering the field of special education but would be invaluable for all who work with young people. Both public and academic libraries at all levels.-L. Whalen, SUNY at Albany
