A lively, accessible look at the Big Bang theory
This compelling book describes how the Big Bang theory arose, how it has evolved, and why it is the best theory so far to explain the current state of the universe. In addition to understanding the birth of the cosmos, readers will learn how the theory stands up to challenges and what it fails to explain. Karen Fox provides clear answers to some of the hardest questions including: Why was the Big Bang theory accepted to begin with? Will the Big Bang theory last into the next century or even the next decade? Is the theory at odds with new scientific findings? One of the most well-known theories in modern science, the Big Bang is the most accurate model yet devised in humanity's tireless serach for the ultimate moment of creation. The Big Bang Theory is the first title in a planned series on the major theories of modern science.

CHOICE Review

After an introduction to the history of cosmological models, the big bang model is outlined with supporting evidence. Fox does a good job, in particular with the explanation of inflationary models. She then discusses problems with the model as well as the direction of future research. This book will interest someone who is reading about the theory for the first time, and should serve this type of reader well in pointing out the main points and contentions of the theory. The level is appropriate for any adult, and Fox does a good job of explaining scientific terms. However, the book is weak when it considers other areas; it loses steam in the final sections where issues such as "Is there a creator?" and "What came before the big bang?" are addressed. The discussion of a creator is too brief; the writing ends with the statement that the answers are not scientific so the reader should "Pick the one you like better." This approach lessens the import of the book. Overall, a good work for the uninitiated, but students with some background should look elsewhere for material outside the theory proper.
