CHOICE Review

The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements is a regularly updated collective statement of nursing's values and duties, written for nurses, other health care providers, and the public. Fowler's guide is a collection of nine chapters written by leading nurse-ethicists that challenge readers to value and apply the interrelated provisions of the code. Although the intended audience is not specified (the "you" of some of the chapters), this work is most applicable as a teaching tool for nursing students and nurses in practice. Unfortunately, the quality of the chapters is uneven. Stronger chapters are scholarly, philosophically insightful, complex in the questions they raise, and inclusive of the wide range of ethical concerns that nurses face in their varied roles and responsibilities. Other chapters include outdated sexist language, gloss over the rich history of a provision, or are overly prescriptive. As editor and author, Fowler is to be commended for providing a thought-provoking book that adds to nurses' understanding of the historically rooted and central place the code should have as the foundation of ethical nursing practice. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates, two-year technical program students, and professionals/practitioners. M. D. Lagerwey Western Michigan University
