In his brief and cryptic preface, the author presents the raison d'etre for the book: "Out of frustration, love, and necessity, I decided that there must be an easier way" to "find the information now included in this book." Designed with exceptional clarity in vibrant colors by Giampietro+Smith, the volume is divided into ten sections: awards, competitions, design centers, education, events, media, museums, organizations, trade shows, and manufacturers. This fundamentally sound concept for a resource guide is flawed by a weak structure for the data, which lacks hierarchy and depth. Listings are often alphabetical rather than geographical, making it a good source for inveterate browsers but a marginal source for those seeking information linked to localities or regions. A further example is the list of manufacturers--by far the largest listing in the volume, but arranged by neither product nor locality. Occasionally, as is the case with the tours category, there are dual listings where a single, consolidated geographical arrangement would have been considerably more useful.
