CHOICE Review

A well-written textbook that focuses on water treatment technology, oriented toward the removal of contaminants, mostly organic compounds, by activated carbon. The book describes the current state of the art of carbon and resin adsorptive processes for potable water treatment; some wastewater applications are also mentioned. Much more detail on theory and application is presented in this book by concentrating on one type of process rather than several, such as found in Gordon L. and Russell L. Culp's New Concepts in Water Purification (1974) and H.E. Hudson's Water Clarification Processes: Practical Design and Evaluation (1981). After discussing the basic fundamentals of adsorption, the authors deal with adsorptive systems, process design of adsorbers, the adsorption of organic compounds, and the removal of inorganic compounds. Applications are then presented in the form of case studies. The final chapters deal with biologically activated carbon treatment of drinking water and adsorption by macroreticular resins. Numerous end-of-chapter references; liberal sprinkling with tables, graphs and illustrations. Highly recommended for academic libraries serving advanced undergraduates and graduate students in chemical engineering.-M.M. Fogel, University of Arizona
