CHOICE Review

This up-to-date book consists of contributions by renowned cancer research authorities who discuss the molecular basis of cancer in terms of their areas of expertise. After a presentation of the clinician's view on the basic problems that need to be solved by the cancer researcher, a systemic description is given of the three main cancer causative agents-radiation, viruses, and chemicals. This is followed by sections on the diagnosis and testing for cancer and carcinogens, and on the major cancer treatment regimens-hormone therapy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Farmer and Walker emphasize the action of carcinogenesis and the nature, detection, and treatment of cancer that can only be understood and achieved by a thorough knowledge of the basic biochemical and molecular biological mechanisms involved. Each chapter begins with a table of contents followed by a detailed discussion supplemented with various figures of chemical structures, tables, and charts. The reader will appreciate chapter conclusions, references, and bibliographies. This book is more detailed, complex, and current than the standard source of its type. Recommended for both advanced undergraduate and graduate levels as well as for professionals in cancer research and the medical fields.-H.S. Pitkow, Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine
