CHOICE Review

A great deal of historical, empirical, and demographic data is given to introduce the reader to the illnesses anorexia nervosa and bulimia. The highly technical and medical language, along with the frequent statistical data in the tables, graphs, or illustrations, would probably be more intriguing to the doctor, graduate nursing student, or health care provider specializing in the treatment of these disorders, than to undergraduate nursing or health science students. A curiosity of this book is the inconsistency of the bibliography/references; for some chapters, these are sparse and for other chapters, they are extensive. One wonders if there are a lot of the authors' personal observations and work in some of these chapters. The index makes up for the unevenness of the bibliographies/references. An interesting perspective throughout the book is the implication of ideas of love, femininity, and sensuousness as part of the causes, concerns, and treatment of these illnesses. The high-level medical language and the technical detail make this work most useful to the advanced undergraduate or the graduate student. For the lower-division undergraduate, Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia (reviewed above) would be a better choice.-G. Russell, Tennessee Technological University
