CHOICE Review

The authors present a unique approach to the problems faced in industrial wastewater treatment. Most books are arranged by type of pollutant-explaining sources and adverse environmental effects and describing methods for removal. This is a useful approach for introducing students to the subject, but oversimplifies the problems faced by designers of real-life treatment systems. Eilbeck and Mattock's purpose is to fill a gap-to provide students and practicing engineers with an understanding of the basis of chemical reactions widely used in wastewater treatment and of the practical aspects of selecting, applying, and controlling these processes. The authors are well qualified to write about both chemical treatment theory and chemical process application. Their book is clearly written, with up-to-date references, an adequate index, and useful appendixes, although a more detailed table of contents would have helped. It should be valuable as a supplementary textbook for industrial wastewater treatment courses and as a reference for chemical engineering. However, a more traditional introduction to the subject, such as J.W. Patterson's Industrial Wastewater Treatment Technology (2nd ed., 1985; 1st ed., CH, Dec '76) would be preferable as a basic textbook. Libraries with undergraduate or graduate programs in chemical and sanitary engineering will want to purchase this volume.-C.C. Greene, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
