Draws on in-depth interviews and case studies to examine the emotional side of business, offering strategies entrepreneurs use to cope with the loneliness, stress, and isolation they often feel. Uncovers the dilemmas that entrepreneurs confront at each stage of their careers--from start-up through retirement--including organizational systems that midcareer entrepreneurs use to maintain control of their growing businesses and how entrepreneurs overcome resistance to retirement and plan for this transition.

CHOICE Review

This fascinating and readable book will appeal to anyone interested in entrepreneurship. Dyer has the gift of being able to splice academic matter with practical experience, thereby creating a readable, novel-like treatise. The book is based on interviews with more than 125 entrepreneurs and covers not only professional aspects but also the personal sides of these business people. Interviewees were at different points in their careers, which enabled the author to address the three stages of the business life-cycle theory. The first stage addresses the typical start-up problems. The second examines the mid-career period, a time of introspection for the entrepreneur whose business is well established. The last section is an interesting piece about succession and grappling with retirement. Dyer's information is adequately documented, thereby providing a wonderful reading list for those who wish to learn more. This book should appeal to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and entrepreneurs. S. D. Goldberg; University of New Haven
