Revisión: "It is rare to encounter an architect who consistently and rigorously seeks to reduce space to its most basic forms, while remaining acutely sensitive to the human experience of that space. For over two decades, Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen has created a series of exquisite buildings and residences, from the Low Countries to New York, with profoundly elemental spaces enriched by a refined palette of materials. The results are at once sublime and rich, minimal yet tactile." "This is the complete monograph of Van Duysen's work, including his domestic architecture, office and commercial spaces, as well as furniture and decorative objects for such leading international manufacturers as B&B Italia, Poliform and Swarovski. Over thirty projects are presented in detail, each with a project profile, many accompanied by specially commiss ioned photographs taken by Alberto Piovano, along with a complete project chronology. Collected together in a large-scale format, the book includes an introduction by noted architecture critic Marc Dubois and tributes by architects David Adjaye, Alberto Campo Baeza and Michael Gabellini, fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester and furniture designer Patricia Urouiola, all of whom provide fascinating insights into Van Duysen's inspirational output."--BOOK JACKET.

For over two decades, Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen has created a body of work that is at once sublime and rich, minimal yet tactile. In a series of exquisite houses and residences from the Low Countries to America, Van Duysen has reduced living space to its elemental form while using a refined palette of materials that ensure the highest emotional response.

As Ilse Crawford, former editor of Elle Decoration, whose own home was refashioned by Van Duysen, writes in her foreword, " You are not just impressed by the beauty of the spaces but by the memory of the details and the feeling of the materials."

Here are more than thirty projects, many accompanied by specially commissioned photographs taken by Alberto Piovano. The book includes tributes by leading international architects David Adjaye and Michael Gabellini, fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester, and furniture designer Patricia Urquoila, all of whom provide insights into Van Duysen's work. This book reveals to the full why he has become such a cult figure in international architecture and design.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 270).

Library Journal Review

At the age of 46, Van Duysen, who was born in Belgium and educated at the Higher Institute of Architecture in Saint-Lucas, Ghent, has already established himself as one of the 21st century's most influential architects and designers. Often described as "minimal yet tactile," his work utilizes materials that are quite lush, thus making modernist design comfortable and livable. He has made his career at refining industrial design while developing a philosophy he calls the "Art of Living." With images from all of Van Duysen's worldwide creations, the subjects in this complete monograph range from pottery and furniture to office buildings and private residences, including his designs for Swarovski and B&B Italia. The book's comprehensive presentation features precise details on more than 30 projects; it also includes a selection of commentaries by experts who place his work into a historical yet current aesthetic context. Architecture critic Marc Dubois contributes the introduction; Ilse Crawford (founding editor, Elle Decoration magazine) writes the forward. VERDICT Recommended for architecture and design collections.-Shauna Frischkorn, Millersville Univ., PA (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
