CHOICE Review

Are there ways of knowing that draw on and reflect the situation and experience of women? Answering affirmatively, Duran outlines a feminist epistemology (the gynocentric model) that emphasizes contextualization and communication reflecting the special situatedness of women. In carrying out this project she draws from contemporary analytic philosophy, establishing a connection through naturalized epistemology, which suggests that all epistemic justification depends on context. In addition to commenting on contemporary analytic epistemology, Duran provides helpful discussions of work by other feminist theorists, both American (Harding, Bordo, Hartsock, Keller, and Flax, among others) and Continental (Cixous, Irigaray, Kristeva). She also treats feminist work in nonphilosophical areas, particularly the sociology of knowledge. Duran is sensitive to the philosophical difficulties involved in her project--especially to the problem of using existing philosophical theory while avoiding its androcentric bias. The result is an important advance in feminist philosophy. Upper-division undergraduates and above. -J. W. Meiland, University of Michigan
