This book comprises all of Dummett's published and previously unpublished essays on Gottlob Frege, with the exception of those included in his Truth and Other Enigmas. In some of these essays he explores the relation of Frege's ideas to those of his predecessors and contemporaries. In othershe considers critically some interpretations of Frege, and develops the argument for a sound understanding of Frege's thought. Several of the essays illustrate his contention that Frege's work remains the best starting point for the investigation of problems concerning truth, meaning, and thoughtand language, which are still among the most contentious issues in modern analytical philosophy.

CHOICE Review

A welcome volume that brings together nearly all of Dummett's philosophical essays since Truth and Other Enigmas (CH, May'79). There are 15 total, 3 not previously published. With the exception of the third essay, which addresses a purely mathematical question raised by Frege concerning right-ordered groups, all the essays concern the relationship between Frege's philosophy and the views of other philosophers either predecessors, contemporaries, or modern commentators. The first essay explores the relationship of Frege's views on the consistency of mathematical theories with those of David Hilbert, while the seventh essay compares Frege and Kant on geometry and spatial intuition. Essays 4, 5, and 6 issued from a dispute between Dummett and Hans Sluga over the historical influences on Frege and concern what influence, if any, Hermann Lotze had on Frege. Essays 2 and 13 compare Frege's ideas with those of Franz Brentano and especially Edmund Husserl; Essay 11 reflects on Frege's influence on Wittgenstein. The remaining essays are critiques of modern interpretations of Frege, but are useful even for readers not especially concerned with the writers Dummett is criticizing. Overall, a philosophically rich and challenging collection. Highly recommended for advanced undergraduates and above.-W. Taschek, University of Michigan
