CHOICE Review

Very little has been written on the subject of social skills in children or social skill therapy with children; this book more than adequately fills this need. The primary emphasis is on intervention, covering effective and ineffective social skills functioning and different techniques for achieving change. The section on shy children is excellent and covers terminology, assessment, screening, and intervention planning; it also describes earlier research and previously developed programs. Programs mentioned are eclectic and the book does not favor any one school. Dowrick (University of Alaska, Anchorage) has included a section on videotraining; this is no surprise given his earlier work: Using Video: Psychological and Social Applications, ed. by P. Dowrick and S.J. Biggs (1983). In the new work everything is covered from what types of camera equipment to buy to refining filming techniques; the explanation and procedures recommended for using videotaping as a means of therapy will be of value to clinicians. The use of references throughout the text is extensive, as is the annotated bibliography. An appended section of skills checklists and assessments will be helpful to both caregivers and clinicians. Written primarily for child clinicians or others providing child care, the book is also appropriate for parents or students in training programs.-A. Brazer-Rush, SUNY College at Oswego
