CHOICE Review

This new edition reflects tremendous changes in communications technology with an additional 2,000 words, terms, acronyms, and initialisms--a 50 increase over the 1978 edition (CH, Apr '79). Most of the increase can be credited to satellite terminology, cable proliferation, and the evolution of video in the film industry. On occasion the definitions can be distressingly brief, some only five words long, but there are extensive "see" and "compare" notes. Moreover, within entries, the use of italics indicates still further definitions. Diamant, also a historian, continues the historical practice of the first and second editions with parenthesized dates to indicate year of invention, or initial development. This edition, like the earlier, includes American and British equivalencies. (It is a nice irony that the industry most likely to promote international communication and understanding should have so many inconsistencies of usage and meaning.) This is an authoritative dictionary, with a distinguished editorial board representing all facets of communications and broadcasting. A solid purchase for public, academic, or special libraries serving media programs. -D. A. Schmitt, St. Louis Community College at Meramec
