Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Even when available elsewhere, information on these 50 English-language authors is sparse; the in-depth treatment here includes biography, description of major works and themes, summary of critical reception, and an exhaustive bibliography of works by and about each author. Both academic and public libraries will want to accept this invitation to another world.

Library Journal Review

Caribbean literature is an emerging literature with origins perhaps only as recent as the 20th century. Nevertheless, it boasts major efforts by indisputable talents such as V. S. Naipaul and Jamaica Kincaid, and the number of distinguished Caribbean writers is growing. Dance's work answers a definite need for quality biographical and critical information on these writers. Each of its entries includes a biographical sketch, description of major works and themes, summary of critical response, and bibliography of works by and about the author. This work augments and updates Donald E. Herdeck's Caribbean Writers (Three Continents, 1979) and Jeanette Allis's West Indian Literature (LJ 5/1/81 ). Highly recommended for academic and most public library reference collections. Melissa Cain, Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Lib. (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Caribbean Writers, ed. by Donald Herdeck (CH, Dec '79), included 363 Anglophones. Dance treats a select 50 (four not in Herdeck) at greater length (up to ten times as long), but with no clear selection criteria beyond omitting nonliterary authors (e.g., Eric Williams, Lord Constantine). Only four are little islanders, only four aged under 45, only nine dead, and only ten women. Sadly but inevitably, all but 17 are emigrants. They range from the obvious (e.g., V.S. Naipaul, Edgar Mittelholzer) to such undeservedly neglected authors as Marion Patrick Jones. Entries include brief biographies (inconsistently treated: detailed marital histories for some, but no mention that another with an equally complicated life had ever been wed); a discussion of ``major works and themes''; a summary of ``critical reception''; ``honors and rewards''; and a select bibliography. There is a 19-item general bibliography and a 500-heading index. Although there remain West Indian writers ignored by both Herdeck and Dance, this usefully detailed source deserves to be in any library seriously interested in literature in English in the broader (non-WASP) sense.-L. Hallewell, The Ohio State University
