CHOICE Review

A welcomed addition to the numerous works published in this field of study. Written by three well-known scholars who have already made major outstanding contributions to the study of the sociology of sport, this text emphasizes the results of research conducted in many of the social sciences as well as work done by journalists, educators, and those inside the world of sport. It gives an interesting and thorough overview of the field of study and presents evidence illustrating the social significance of sport. The chapters dealing with sport and how it reflects other social institutions--i.e., family, school, politics, economy, and mass media--are very well presented. The chapters dealing with the inequalities in social class, age and gender, and race are exceptional. The references cited, as well as up-to-date examples, are an additional asset. Sport as a vehicle of social conflict and a stimulus for social change is well presented and documented. Each chapter contains a general overview, "highlights," and "wrap up," which are very helpful to the reader. A glossary, references with each chapter, and an author index make the book very helpful to the student of the sociology of the sport. Highly recommended as a text and a very useful addition to an undergraduate library. -F. D. Handler, St. Bonaventure University
