Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This is a book about structures that shows students how to "see" structures as integral to architecture, and how knowledge of structures is the basis for understanding both the mechanical and conceptual aspects inherent to the art of building.

Analyzing the structural principles behind many of the best known works of architecture from past and present alike, this book places the subject within a contemporary context.

The subject matter is approached in a qualitative and discursive manner, and is illustrated by many photographs of architectural projects and structural behaviour diagrams. This new edition is revised and updated throughout, includes worked-out examples, and is perfect as either an introductory structures course text or as a designer's sourcebook for inspiration.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

This book could serve as the textbook for an introductory structures course in an architectural program, but it would not be appropriate for a structural engineering course in a civil engineering curriculum. The first Norwegian edition was published in 1989 (1st English edition, 1992); in this new edition, structural engineer Sandaker and architect Eggen (both, Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Norway) have teamed with structural engineer Cruvellier (Cornell Univ.) to revise and update the text. The authors include many examples and reference several hundred projects, which are indexed by project name. These projects are integrated into the text and span the gamut of architectural styles, including historic, innovative, and modern structures. Numerous photographs and sketches throughout support the volume. Not only a textbook, this work would be worthwhile reading and a good reference for anyone with an interest in architecture and the underlying structural theory. It would be a fine addition to the libraries of practitioners as well as those of laypersons. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates, two-year technical program students, professionals, and general readers. H. I. Epstein University of Connecticut
