Booklist Review

Ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1961, Cowan has since 1969 been a trainer and project leader for Honeywell and Control Data and a consultant for government and industry. Small Decencies' 41 brief essays draw out the larger implications of Cowan's insights into the ways people work together. Sailing, Cowan's favorite leisure activity, figures prominently, and other sports moments--touch football at the seminary, his son's hockey success, a memorable Michael Jordan lay-up in the 1991 NBA championship series, memories of playground games--have their own lessons to teach. Cowan can be tough and explicit about what's wrong with the way things are--"After years of working in a bureaucracy, I am convinced that the absence of character is the cancer of organizations," for instance--but most of this slim volume offers readers sensible advice on how people in organizations can retain their sanity--as well as their creativity, individuality, and integrity. ~--Mary Carroll
