Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This book presents an attachment-based approach to therapy that addresses the limiting and detrimental effects of negative early attachment experiences.

Our early attachment experiences with our primary caregiver influence the adult that we become. Attachment-based psychotherapy has two major components: establishing a security-engendering therapeutic relationship and helping the patient to communicate more openly and thus to access more adaptive feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Psychotherapists of various theoretical orientations will appreciate this book's richly detailed conceptualization of common human problems and its clear treatment approach for addressing these problems.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 221-257) and index.

CHOICE Review

This book is not exactly what one might think it is, given its title. That is, Costello (communication and psychology, Adelphi Univ., and a practicing psychologist) does not focus on helping clinicians (or clinicians in training) learn particular skills in attachment-based therapy: this is not a "how to" book. This may disappoint some readers. However, the book may still be a useful learning tool. In the first half the author focuses on describing attachment and attachment theory, and he does so exceptionally well. As such the book offers readers a deeper understanding of this theory, laying a foundation for conceptualizing an individual's suffering according to this framework. In the second half of the book Costello addresses therapeutic process. Taken all together, the chapters help the reader become familiar with targets of therapeutic intervention when working according to attachment theory. Brief illustrative cases are helpful in this regard. By the end of the book, the author has made a solid case for the utility of this approach for problems of interpersonal dysfunction, and he demonstrates its usefulness in concert with other therapeutic modalities. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students, faculty, professionals. A. L. Bizub Elmira College

His work combines both fields. Dr. Costello completed his clinical training at The New York State Psychiatric Institute and at the New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. In addition to attachment theory, his current interests include an integrative approach to psychotherapy, and in recent years he has co-chaired two international conferences sponsored by the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration. He also serves on the editorial board of the newly launched journal of the Unified Psychotherapy Project.
