Booklist Review

A professor of psychology and counseling presents a tough, explicit, and tightly structured report on sexual abuse, concentrating on relationships that take place in the home between parents and children/teenagers. Using composite cases to clarify her points, she debunks myths associated with abuse; explains how adults misuse power and authority to entrap boys and girls; looks at patterns of family relationships that often coexist with abuse in the home; and discusses types of counseling available to victims. Shifting to a question-and-answer approach, Cooney addresses victims directly, urging them to report sexual abuse and preparing them honestly for what such revelations may mean to them individually and to their families. While she acknowledges the inability of some victims to disclose their distress and cautiously offers a few suggestions for temporary escape, she is firm in her resolve that abuse must be exposed, despite the consequences. Though the author provides neither notes nor a bibliography, both of which would have been helpful, she does include end-of-chapter questions and suggestions for role playing that will encourage and enable readers to confront the subject more easily and bring their concerns into the open, especially if a knowledgeable, caring adult is available. A directory of state and national contact organizations and an index are appended. Gr. 10-12. SZ. 362.7'044 Child molesting / Child abuse [CIP] 86-29641
