CHOICE Review

In spite of the sluggish global economy, the biotechnology economic sector has grown steadily and continues to provide hope for future economic development in many nations. Biotechnology is also one of the fastest-growing scientific endeavors. This book by Pele and Cimpeanu (both, Univ. of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Romania) focuses on the bioprocessing aspect of biotechnology--the earliest application of the field. The first chapter defines biotechnology and provides a brief history of biological product manufacturing. Chapter 2 describes the types of microorganisms and cells used for bioprocessing and the commercially important metabolic products of these microorganisms and cells. The next two chapters provide detailed coverage of the procedures used in modern bioprocessing, including comprehensive treatment of the design and operation of bioreactors. Chapter 5 focuses on the procedures needed to isolate and analyze bioreactor products; a discussion of bioprocess modeling follows in chapter 6. The book ends with current examples of bioprocessing used in food production, industry, medicine, and environmental remediation. Each chapter contains diagrams and ample current primary references. A time line of biotechnology is available at the end of the volume. Overall, a very readable text in spite of the technical coverage. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels of students and researchers/faculty. B. R. Shmaefsky Lone Star College - Kingwood
