CHOICE Review

Although depression is the most common mental disorder among the elderly it is the most frequently ``missed'' and most inadequately treated illness. Chaisson-Stewart has edited a comprehensive volume-a handbook actually-that will contribute substantially to improvements in both diagnosis and treatment. It lays a conceptual foundation for further research as well. The emphasis is upon prevention where possible, and on early detection and problem-oriented intervention strategies when the disease exists. The editor uses an interdisciplinary approach in the selection of contributors and presents the work in three global parts: Concepts, Diagnosis, and Intervention. Chapters dealing with intervention range from drug treatment, psychotherapy, and nutrition to exercise and volunteerism. A detailed index adds to the book's usefulness. The extensive lists of references at each chapter's end make possible the editor's goal-the individualized design of problem-focused interventions for older persons suffering from depression. For informed general readers as well as professionals; scholars in gerontology and other branches of the social and medical sciences will find this a required volume. Highly recommended for academic libraries serving students in psychology, health sciences, and social work.-E.J. Oyer, formerly Michigan State University
