CHOICE Review

In this thorough revision of the first edition of their handbook (CH, Nov'99, 37-1841), Cassidy (Univ. of Maryland) and Shaver (Univ. of California, Davis) have added new chapters on such topics as social neuroscience, affect regulation, attachment in the middle-childhood years, foster care, divorce, and attachment in an aging population. In addition, all the chapters in the first edition have been updated to include discoveries made over the past decade. In particular, the impact of new discoveries in neuroscience and behavioral genetics are evident in many chapters, and reports of translational research that continue to link attachment theory to clinical applications are even more prevalent. The unique feature of this handbook is the integration of content in each chapter with that presented elsewhere in the volume; indeed, the extensive cross-referencing testifies to the interdependence among the volume's contributors. Predictions that the first edition of this handbook would become a classic reference in the field have been fulfilled, and the same can certainly be said for this second edition. Even those who own the first edition will want to acquire this one. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers, all levels. R. B. Stewart Jr. Oakland University
