CHOICE Review

This collection of 15 essays by an international group of political scientists, a volume in the University of Pittsburgh Series in Policy and Institutional Studies, is intended to answer the question, "Are the structural features of government systems and the characteristics of the organizations that compose government important?" The editors--Peters (Pittsburgh) and Campbell (Georgetown)--set the stage for the volume in their introductory essays. The next three contributors look at aspects of the cross-national dimensions of the subject from three different perspectives, while three more authors zero in on administration in Britain. The remaining essays (save for some concluding remarks by Campbell) focus on administrative experience in the US, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, and Bangladesh. Although the essays are merely presented seriatim, they have been well edited and together provide a unique analysis of an important but neglected facet of government today. The notes to each essay, taken together, constitute a bibliography; there is no index. Probably of more interest to budding and practicing public administrators and politicians than to the general public. For upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. -R. H. Leach, Duke University
