CHOICE Review

Mainly treating the social sciences and humanities, the citations come from America: History and Life and span 1973 to 1985. Many abstracts are signed, although the abstracters are not all listed in the author index. There is a thorough subject index. The compiler understands the complex reality of Latinos. Many were here before the continent turned English-speaking, many have just arrived. The name ``Latino'' is supposed to fit these two extremes and all variations between. The arrangement of the book tries to accommodate this. In the first two chapters, the details of the founding Hispanos of the Southwest are covered. The next chapter (the longest), ``People from Mexico,'' does honor to the fact that the Mexican-origin Latins are the most numerous and have lived longest in what became the US. The Caribbean-origin Latins and Central and South Americans are treated in one chapter. An interdisciplinary work, intelligently conceived, of value to college and university libraries.-R.
