CHOICE Review

Very similar to the 1980 edition (CH, May'81), this version was designed to "augment" the first. A fourth criterium for word inclusion, "regularly used by attorneys," has been added to the previous three: "words that are strictly legal," "commonly used by members of law profession," or "sufficiently sophisticated to warrant their use by attorneys." Arrangement is identical to the first edition, but the size has been reduced by 47 pages. The work's major selling point should be its aptness in pulling together words that reflect the changing vocabulary of the legal profession, but in this it fails. "Deregulation," "leveraged buyout," "junk bonds," and "chemical deposition" are not among the main headings or associated terms, or in the index. Words found only in the index are "emission," defined as outburst or issuance, "gay," as jocular, and "fetus," as embryo. In the main headings "surrogate" is an adjective with no reference to reproduction, "waste" is not defined in the context of the environment, "refuse" is not a noun, "leverage" is only a noun with no associated terms, "harass" is not associated with sexual harrassment, and minority is misspelled "minorority." Words added include "antitrust act," "abalienate," "cognomen," "grace period," and "prestidigitation." If properly updated, this thesaurus would have enjoyed much use, but it will not be needed by libraries that own the first edition. Not recommended. P. N. Arnold; Norwich University
