Booklist Review

This excellent volume on the joys, problems, and pitfalls of organized athletic involvement for children should draw an audience in all public libraries. The authors, both University of Virginia sports instructors, cogently address the ways parents can responsibly direct their children into team or individual sports, with emphasis on setting realistic goals, stressing the social values sports can teach, balancing scholastic demands with those of the sport in question, and avoiding the high-pressure tactics that can ultimately ruin a child's confidence or relationship with his or her parents. The text comprehensively covers how to choose a sport for one's child; what parents and the child athlete can or should expect from coaches, game officials, and peers; how to coach one's own child; how to assess a child's talents for the possibility of a professional sports career; etc. Other basic practical considerations such as expenditures of time and money, nutrition, and injury prevention for the growing young body are also discussed. Most of all, Rotella and Bunker see sports as an important component in the life of the well-rounded child, which should be encouraged not for parental ego boosting but for lifelong personal and physical enjoyment.
