CHOICE Review

Brown (Univ. of Delaware) surveyed and analyzed the reading lists of 56 Spanish graduate programs (from the mid-1990s onward) and here reveals her discovery that a few score authors appear on a mere 50 percent of the lists. Only Cervantes and Galdos make them all. This is shocking for a literature with a history dating back more than a millennium. Moreover doctoral Spanish programs in the US now number only 49 and, if anything, present-day reading lists are in less agreement concerning canonical authors and works. Brown calls for scholars of Spanish to confer and form a working canon of Spanish literary works--a canon that would serve as a core literature for study of the languages, literatures, and cultures of the Iberian Peninsula and their expansion and development by the Creole, mestizo, and indigenous peoples of the Americas. The author identifies and discusses important extrinsic and intrinsic criteria for use in developing such a canon. The alternative, Brown fears, is irrelevance of this literature in higher education in the US going forward. A fundamental book for scholars of Spanish, Latin American, and US Hispanic literatures and cultures. Summing Up: Essential. Graduates students, researchers, faculty. S. Miller Texas A&M University
